Dear Julie,
Summer is here and it's SIZZLING outside.
Here in Sunny Florida, our temperatures are
soaring in the high 90's, and it's only June!
Keeping cool is at the top of our list. A swim
in the pool, a glass of lemonade and a cold ice
cream cone are a few ways we might do this. Some
of us are thinking about beaches, picnics,
vacations, and summer camp. Are there other
summer traditions on your "to do" list? Here are
some things I remember from my summers
throughout the years.
I actually grew up in Fort Myers, Florida,
but always came to Bradenton to spend a week
with each of my grandmothers. One would take me
to the Five & Dime store or the Dairy Queen for
ice cream or a soda. The other would make me
pancakes every day if I wanted. Attending
Vacation Bible School with some of my cousins
was also a treat.
My family always took a summer vacation,
traveling out of Florida to Ohio, Washington DC,
or North Carolina. Dad always stopped at a motel
with a POOL! I remember he taught me to swim at
one of those pools. After a long day driving in
the car, swimming was the highlight of the day.
Sleep overs with my girlfriends hold great
memories too! One friend had a pond in her
backyard so we could swim all day if we wanted.
Another had a wooded area close by and we always
built a fort there.
What traditions do you remember as a child?
Are you making memories with your children or
grandchildren? If not, think about what fun
activities you can do this summer. Most of all,
think of ways to keep cool! Just spending time
together watching a movie or doing crafts can
make special memories.
Have a "COOL" Summer! Julie & April

DEAR DECORATOR |
 |
|
Dear Decorator:I'm ready to
paint my kitchen. I've chosen the color
but am unsure about what paint finish to
buy. There are so many to choose from.
Are there any rules when chosing a paint
finish?
Answer: Paint comes in a
variety of finishes such as flat, satin,
eggshell, semi-gloss or glossy.
Depending on the room you are painting,
you need to determine what your needs
are. If the room is used by children,
you should choose a paint that is
scrubbable or has a shiny finish, such
as glossy. If the walls have
imperfections you might want to use a
flat finish that won't reflect the
light. The less light that bounces off
the wall, the less chance you will
notice any blemishes. A bathroom may
have a lot of moisture, therefore you
should choose a semi-gloss that will not
show drip marks and is also durable. For
a kitchen, a satin finish is the best
choice because it is formulated to hold
up to cleaning and light scrubbing and
works well in areas with high traffic.
Your local paint store can also help
you choose the right finish. Be sure to
tell them what room you are painting and
ask for their suggestions.

LIGHTEN UP YOUR HOME'S DECOR FOR
SUMMER
|
|
|
|
As we said, keeping cool this summer may
be at the top of your list. What about
your home's decor? Is it cool or
depressing? Did you freshen up things
for spring? Or, after that spring
cleaning, did you put back all your
dark, heavy accessories? If you haven't
changed out any of your home's decor
since the fall, do it now! Your wardrobe
has changed to shorts, tank tops and
bathing suits. If you're thinking about
beaches and keeping cool, your home
could probably use some "cool" new ideas
too! Here are a few ideas to get you
started.
Take down those heavy draperies
and replace with some lightweight
sheers. This will bring in more
light and the room will already feel
brighter. Take them to the dry cleaners
so they will be ready to put back up
this fall.
Replace that centerpiece with some
artificial fruit. If you have a
floral centerpiece on your dining room
table, maybe you can replace it with a
bowl of lemons, green apples, or
oranges. You can buy inexpensive plastic
fruit that looks like the "real" thing.
Put away those pumpkin and apple
pie scented candles. Bring in some
linen, vanilla, lemonade or other light
scent. Fragrance is the quickest way to
set a mood in a room.
Bring out the softer linens.
Crisp white sheets and towels feel clean
and light. A lightweight bedspread could
replace the heavy comforter. Fold the
bedding down so you can see the sheets.
It will feel more relaxed and casual
than all those heavy shams and other
accent pillows you usually use on your
bed.
Look around your home. If something
looks dark and reminds you of fall or
winter, think of a way to brighten that
space. You may just remove an item
completely and store away until later in
the year. Or maybe there is a way to
replace it with something light, bright
and cheery. Have fun with your home's
decor this summer! |
